A little pack of carrot seeds is a wonderful investment in your yard.
Obviously you can pull carrots before they go to seed and enjoy them in your salad or pot roast, but if your soil is extra compact leave a few in the ground to go to seed and let the pollinators enjoy the flowers.
Delicate and fragrant, carrots can be a beautiful addition to your landscape reaching 3 feet.
Similar to Queen Ann's Lace, the domestic carrot is not considered invasive.
Of course you can harvest the seeds for next year or leave them in place and they will come up in the spring and provide flowers from mid spring through late summer.
Leaving the spent flowers through the winter also benefits hungry birds looking for treats.
Carrot seed can be sowed before the last frost for an early harvest and again in mid July for a fall harvest. As a root vegetable they are cold tolerant and can thrive in cold frames for winter enjoyment.
I love the versatility of carrots. They are super easy to grow, disease resistant and maintenance free.
